PHIL 381 - Honors Aesthetics

This honors course considers a range of classic aesthetic theories, and a number of central problems in aesthetics. Among the issues discussed are the definition of art, the nature of aesthetic value and evaluation, the relationship between art and morality, and questions of style and form. The major aesthetic theories discussed are Formalism, Mimetic theory, and Expressionism. Various works of art, including examples from poetry, film, music, architecture, painting, sculpture, and photography will be used in discussing these theories and problems. Students may not receive credit for both PHIL 380  and PHIL 381.
