SOC 212 - Sexualities

This course looks at sexuality in the broadest sense, which means diversity of sexual practices, behavior, orientation, identity, disease, violence, comparative studies, and research. In covering these topics, students look at sex-related controversies such as birth control, abortion, procreation, symbolic meaning and language usage, school education programs, social control, rape, traffic in women, sex tourism, and commercialization. Through the use of readings, films, and guest speakers, the class applies a historical, transnational, and sociological perspective on sexualities from the past and present, and critical thinking to differences among social groups. The impact of gender, race, class, and ethnicity is integrated throughout the course. Student involvement through discussion, research, and presentations ensure an active and meaningful learning environment.
