HUM 131 - Mexican Culture and Society 3 Credit(s)
This course surveys foundational works of Mexican art, literature and intellectual history from its pre-Columbian origins to the present. The material ranges from expressions of a nascent, uniquely Mexican identity during Spanish colonization to artistic responses to Mexico’s rapid transformation from an agrarian society to a predominately urban, industrialized nation after the Mexican Revolution. Issues concerning race, ethnicity, gender, class and national identity are featured prominently in the course material and constitute a central focus of class discussions and essay topics. Specific art forms include literature, painting, sculpture, music, dance, and film. The language of instruction is English.
