ENGL 357 - Rise of the British Novel 3 Credit(s)
A study of the rise of the novel in Great Britain from the 18th century to the 20th century, considering the novel’s changing cultural status and its increasing popularity and social relevance. This course explores how gender, economics, and literary trends have all shaped the form, meaning, and role of the novel, as well as exploring how the form mirrors important cultural issues. Authors studied may include Defoe, Richardson, Smollett, Burney, Austen, the Brontes, Gaskell, Dickens, George Eliot, Hardy, and others.
