ENVR 173 - Investigating Environmental Science

This is an outside laboratory course designed to examine diverse biomes that exist within this geographic region. Students learn how to identify plants and plant associations while in the field. An ecological examination of plant and animal associations in different habitats are used to model and characterize local environments. Land parcels are examined for their presence of unique plant and animal species, the ecological significance of these species, and how plant species change over time as a result of habitat alteration. Students are trained to evaluate parcels of land by examining the ecological significance of species, the degree to which the environment has been disturbed, and the introduction of foreign species. The value of diverse land parcels is evaluated by surveying lumber and evaluating the efficiency of trees to sequester carbon from different habitats. 3 hours lab.
