SW 320 - Generalist Social Work Practice With Individuals, Families, and Groups I 3 Credit(s)
This is the first of a two-semester sequence designed to provide an overview of generalist social work practice with individuals, families, and groups. The course provides students with the conceptual frameworks and skills for strength-based practice, including the role of values and ethics in informing the process. The purpose of the course is for students to develop skills in establishing helping relationships, engaging clients in the change process, conducting assessments, and collaborative planning. Attention is given to understanding ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity with regard to practice. Each student is required to participate in a service learning experience for 15 hours throughout the semester. This service learning opportunity enables students to practice interviewing skills in an agency-based practice and to evaluate their appropriateness for the social work profession.
