SPAN 345 - Coffee Culture in Costa Rica

3 Credit(s)

This course analyzes the role of coffee in Costa Rica’s reputation as an environmentally conscious nation. It integrates this analysis with an exploration of cultural practices and perspectives associated with coffee: its rich, traditional heritage within the larger Central American context; its relationship to tourism and ecotourism; and its place in literature, film, and the arts. During the trip portion to Costa Rica, students participate in activities with Costa Rican college students at Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA) and attend lectures in Spanish by coffee professionals and UNA faculty. Fulfills either one 300-level literature or one 300-level culture requirement for the Spanish major or minor. Travel to Costa Rica is a required component of this course, and students are obligated to pay an additional fee to cover transportation, lodging, and other costs associated with the trip. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 345 and ASC 230
