ENGL 303 - Theory and Praxis of Editing 3 Credit(s)
In this course, students engage with different theories that underpin the editing of literary texts for publication and study, as well as undertake practical experiments with those theories. Theoretical topics considered include: how to take account of an author’s intentions for their text, how to adapt texts for different audiences and publication formats (including online), how to reconcile texts that exist in multiple versions, and how to edit in a manner that challenges hierarchies of gender, race, and sexuality. Practical engagements may include the analysis of existing editions of literary texts, participation in editing projects currently being undertaken by the instructor, and the proposal/implementation of the students’ own editing projects. This course is required for the Certificate in Textual Scholarship, but is open to students of all majors.
