POLS 263 - The United Nations and Global Governance 3 Credit(s)
This course serves as a foundational course exploring the role of the United Nations and other international organizations, regimes, states, and non-state actors in global governance. In an increasingly globalized world where conflict, pandemic disease, financial crises, and climate change cannot be solely addressed by single states alone, it is clear that cooperation and concerted efforts are necessary to address current challenges. As such, global governance structures and agents, both in their informal and formal settings, play an important role in coordinating responses to challenges we face in our current global environment. We will be focusing on the academic and policy debates specific to global governance issues throughout the course. Of particular importance are the ways in which both intergovernmental organizations (IGOS) and non-governmental organizations (NGOS), as well as more informal networks and coalitions of actors, address global threats to human security.
