MATH 111 - Mathematical Ideas I (Q) 3 Credit(s)
This course is designed for students pursuing early childhood or elementary school teacher certification. Emphasis is placed on learning concepts and developing an understanding of mathematics as a body of connected ideas. The NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics provides a framework for the selection of topics for this course. Topics are presented in a historical context and include an introduction to problem solving; elementary set theory; patterns, relations, and functions; number concepts and relationships; and elementary number theory. Prerequisite(s): Humanities or social science major, elementary/early childhood major, or permission of instructor; MATH 101 or at least Level 3 on the Mathematics Assessment.
