POLS 244 - Sub-Saharan African Politics

The course takes a thematic approach to understanding the dynamic issues, themes, and trends that influence the politics, economics, society, and the regional and international interactions within sub-Saharan Africa. In order to understand contemporary problems and politics in the region, the class focuses on the colonial experience and its direct and indirect effects on the postcolonial state, economics, and society. The course also concentrates on issues of ethnicity and ethnic politics, neopatrimonialism, political institutions, political violence, democracy and democratization, and development.
Prerequisite(s): POLS 101  or POLS 102
