The Textual Scholarship Certificate (12 credits) offers an in-depth investigation of the textual and material qualities of literary works. Students in the program explore the nature and stability of “text”; how economic, social, and technological conditions impact the content and interpretation of literary works; and how reception and editing shape the horizon of a text’s meaning. Unique skills and activities, include:
- hands-on work with rare books and archival material
- the chance to recreate and analyze historical practices of bookmaking
- engagement with important contemporary questions around digital reading and born-digital- and computer-generated textuality
- exposure to major debates in editorial theory with hands-on editorial experience, including coding for digital editing
- the opportunity to develop and complete a student-designed research or editorial project
This interdisciplinary program is open to students from any major. The program fits within the English major, Creative Writing major, and English and Creative Writing double major without requiring any additional credits. Please contact program director Dr Christine Woody (cmwoody@widener.edu) for more information.
