ENGL 346 - 18th Century British Literature

3 Credit(s)

The “long” eighteenth century (1688-1815) oversaw Britain’s transformation into an economic and military superpower on the global stage. Culturally, eighteenth century British literature grapples with the significance of this power, working to articulate the values, hopes, and fears of its growing population. This course examines various genres and modes of the period such as Restoration comedy, the epistolary novel, satire in prose and verse, the periodical essay, Enlightenment science and aesthetics, and the literature of sensibility. Authors studied may include Dryden, Behn, Defoe, Johnson, Haywood, Richardson, Pope, Wollstonecraft, and Godwin. Satisfies a humanities general education requirement for non-majors.
