ENGL 347 - British Romanticism (W)

3 Credit(s)

The British Romantic period (1770s–1832) is marked by a series of revolutions: the political revolutions in France, America, and Haiti; the industrial revolution, the ecological consequence of which we are still negotiating today; and an aesthetic revolution that placed new value on diverse perspectives and authentic language. This course explores the aesthetic concept of Romanticism, as well as how changing ideas around democracy, education, race, and gender shaped the literature of the period. This course offers significant coverage of Romantic poets such as Wordsworth, Byron, Keats, Mary Robinson, and Charlotte Smith; as well as Romantic prose writers such as Jane Austen, Maria Edgeworth, and William Hazlitt. Satisfies a humanities general education requirement for non-majors.
