This course examines the evolution of the European city from the eighteenth century to the present. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between the built environment and human experience in cities of various sizes and geographic locations. Topics included will be: changing ideas of what a city is or should be; the impact of industrialization; rural to urban migration; public health and hygiene; urban cultures; wealth, poverty and social geography; riots and revolutions; city planning initiatives; the impact of twentieth-century warfare and displacement on the urban fabric; and contemporary greening efforts.
