This course examines various dimensions of advanced practice nursing, emphasizing the continuum of quality care from the time of a patient’s illness or injury through the period of acute care.  The student gains skill in the illness trajectory: integrating concepts related to prevention of disease, systems for management and rehabilitation and reintegration with society.  The focus is a holistic approach to the nursing care through examination of the healthcare environments, role of the clinical nurse specialist, patient and family as a unit in crisis, and practice issues in the context of current and future health systems.  Pathophysiology, medical diagnostics and therapeutics, and technology related to specific acute health problems will be addressed. The clinical nurse specialist’s role in preparedness for disaster management will be included along with analyzing issues and applying current evidence to complex situations and settings.
