English, BA

As an English major, you will study a wide range of texts throughout literary history. In the process, you will engage daily with new cultures, ideas, and perspectives. Class discussions, scholarly essays, and oral presentations will help you hone critical thinking skills that are essential for a wide variety of professions. In addition, you can gain valuable hands-on experiences by pursuing a Textual Scholarship certificate, working on in-house literary journals, and engaging in community service work through the Sparrow House.

Textual Scholarship Certificate

The Textual Scholarship Certificate (12 credits) offers an in-depth investigation of the textual and material qualities of literary works. The program includes hands-on work with rare books and archival material, experience in coding for digital editing, and the opportunity to complete a student-designed scholarly or editorial project. This program fits within the English major, Creative Writing major, and English-Creative writing double major without requiring any additional credits.

Pre-Law Option for the English Major

English is a traditional major for pre-law students. English students considering the study of law may pursue the legal studies and analysis minor offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. Students seeking further information on this program and on preparation for law school should contact pre-law advisor Professor Suzanne Mannus.

3 + 3 Widener Law Option for the English Major

In addition to the pre-law option, students with a high level of academic potential interested in majoring in English with law school as their ultimate goal may be eligible for the “3 + 3” program with a Widener law school. See Professor Janine Utell, department chair, for details.
