BIOL 342 - Tropical Ecology Laboratory 2 Credit(s)
This laboratory course is the field component of BIOL 340 /ENVR 340 . Students design and carry out a research project that is completed during a one-week field-trip experience in a tropical forest environment. Students develop a research question and conduct an extensive literature search on a topic pertaining to tropical ecology prior to traveling to the research site. Students work closely with the instructor( s) to ensure that they are able to complete a project during the week-long field experience. After the project has been completed, students are responsible for analyzing and writing their results as if they intend to submit their research to a journal for publication. Students present their findings to the Widener community or at a regional or national meeting. This course is open to upper-division biology and environmental science students. Upper-division students from other majors within the sciences may be allowed to enroll with the permission of the instructor. Prerequisite(s): BIOL 161 , BIOL 162 .Corequisite(s): BIOL 340 /ENVR 340 . A total of 35 hours prior to the field experience and 45 hours in the field.
