Earn your bachelor’s degree while preparing to teach Spanish within PK-12 schools.  You’ll learn the ins and outs of being a teacher through the College of Health and Human Services’ Center for Education while majoring in Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages, College of Arts and Sciences.  The PK-12 Spanish teacher education program emphasizes bilingual education, where students are immersed in Spanish classrooms in elementary, middle, and high schools.

The program is open to all students regardless of their level of proficiency in Spanish. However, students entering the program below the 300-level must demonstrate a commitment to working with their faculty advisor in Spanish to acquire advanced language skills and knowledge of Spanish and Latin American literature and culture. This would likely involve participation in a study abroad program, enrolling in summer and/or winter session courses, and other academic work designed to accelerate their progress through the Spanish curriculum in order to complete the program in 8 semesters. Double majors, including other fields in the humanities, social sciences, or math/science are possible but require careful planning. If students are considering a double major, it is important that they begin working early with their advisor to complete the requirements for both major programs and teacher certification. In certain cases, it may not be possible to complete all of the requirements within the usual eight-semester undergraduate program.

Curriculum Sequence

Changes may occur via the Pennsylvania Department of Education and will be communicated to you through your advisor. This may affect prescribed courses. Education students must receive a grade of C or better in all education classes. Students must pass PAPA, CORE, or have SAT or ACT scores that are high enough to offer exemption from these assessments to be admitted to teacher candidacy. Please see the Office of Teacher Education & Certification for more information on testing. Students must have current criminal record checks, FBI clearances, and child abuse clearances.
